What are the different styles of cabinet doors?

Blog

If you are currently remodeling your kitchen, you might be re-thinking your cabinets. The first choice is to decide on the types of cabinet doors you want. There are many different varieties, from flat and standard to decorative or frameless. Here are some different styles to choose from.

Traditional Cabinet Doors

The basic cabinet doors, called traditional or sometimes face-frame cabinet doors, have the flat cabinet door framed in a cabinet box. Within the traditional door, there may be some different styles, where they have raw or clean edges and may or may not have hinges that are visible. These are among the least expensive and easiest to install. They are also easy to upgrade to different looks in the future, such as changing to different hinges and pulls or painting over the cabinets easily.

Louver Cabinet Doors

If you want a little more texture in your kitchen, you can go with cabinet doors that have a louvered look. Louvered doors contain flat doors that don't have a box or frame around them ,but instead are covered with wood slats going horizontally along the doors. These are the same types of slats you might see on louvered windows. They are primarily used for architectural elements but can also be beneficial if you want some of the colors of your dishes to show through in between the slats.

Inset Cabinet Doors

When you have a larger budget for the kitchen remodel and want some of the sleekest looking cabinets available, you can go with inset cabinet doors. These are expensive due to the more complex building and installation process. With inset cabinet doors, they are built inside the frame of the cabinets, as opposed to resting on the outside of the frame like with your regular cabinet doors. This must be done perfectly, so it is not ideal for a do-it-yourself (DIY) project. Get a professional who is nearly obsessed with paying attention to detail. If it is even a tiny bit off, it looks very obvious.

Frameless Cabinet Doors

You can also choose to have frameless cabinet doors, which create a sleek and modern look for your kitchen. When you have a high-end kitchen with marble or granite countertops and stainless steel appliances, this style of cabinet doors works perfectly. The doors are going to be mounted right inside the cabinet with hidden hinges and cabinets that are flush with the wall to complete the look.
